Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of life’s most incredibly amazing and challenging transitions. But in the whirlwind of sleepless nights, feeding schedules, and endless diaper changes, one crucial thing that often gets overlooked is your recovery.

As a Mom of 2 (and having recovered twice from a C-Section) I know first hand the first couple weeks (or more!) can be such a whirlwind and while the most rewarding, some of the most challenging moments.

The traditional recommendation is that we have to “wait 6 weeks” before seeking help or guidance. Yet this waiting period can delay healing, increase pain, and leave many without a clear plan to a path or recovery.

Early postpartum physical therapy is imperative to promote healing and provide clear guidance and guidelines on your recovery, and the best part? With mobile care, you don’t even have to leave your home to get the support you need.

Let’s break down why early access to postpartum physical therapy matters and how it can help you feel stronger, more confident, and more supported in your recovery.

You Don’t Have to Wait to Feel Better!

The traditional six-week postpartum check-up isn’t a green light to begin care, it provides very important medical clearance, and marks an important milestone in the healing journey. However, it is not the end all be all timeline to begin seeking care.

Starting gentle, supportive physical therapy as early as 1–2 weeks postpartum can significantly improve outcomes.

During those first weeks, your body is undergoing major changes:

  • Hormones are shifting
  • The uterus is shrinking
  • Your pelvic floor and abdominal wall are healing
  • You’re adjusting to entirely new movements taking care of your newborn (those car seats are HEAVY and awkward to carry!)

Early PT meets you where you are (physically and emotionally) to help restore function, ease discomfort, and guide you through safe movement from the very beginning.

Healing and Regaining Strength Starts Early

Early postpartum physical therapy isn’t about doing crunches or jumping jacks or running.  It’s about gentle movements to support your core and pelvic floor muscles in a vulnerable state, working on body mechanics to maximize your recovery and reduce strain during movements  like bending and lifting your newborn baby, and addressing any immediate concerns such as diastasis recti or stress incontinence.

Your body is incredibly resilient, but healing is better when it’s guided and directed with a clear plan.

Movement Is Medicine for Your Body and Mind

The postpartum period is not just a physical adjustment, it’s an emotional one too.

Hormones, identity shifts, lack of sleep, and physical discomfort can all affect mental well-being.

Gentle, guided movement releases endorphins to help improve mood.

Even with limited and broken sleep schedules, gentle movement and walking can help support sleep in the early postpartum period as well.

Additionally, early mobility and gentle movement can provide a space for connecting to yourself and your body again, providing opportunities for self-awareness and self-care.

And perhaps just as importantly,  working with a physical therapist one on one can be a safe space to talk about how you’re feeling—both physically and emotionally.

Whole-Body Recovery (It’s Not Just About the Pelvis)

New parents often experience aches and pains far beyond the pelvic floor. For example:

  • Neck and shoulder pain from feeding and babywearing
  • Wrist and hand strain (hello, mom thumb!)
  • Low back tension from poor sleep positions or constant rocking

Postpartum PT addresses the whole body, helping you move through the day with less aches and pains to better care for yourself and your baby.

We Connect You to a Full Circle of Support

Your physical therapist is more than just a movement expert, we pride ourselves as being a part of your postpartum team. It truly takes a village and we are proud to play a small part.

Through our community network, we can help provide recommendations and support for lactation support, mental health therapists, further medical screenings, and more.

Working with a Physical Therapist in the early days and weeks postpartum can help to provide another set of eyes and ears on your recovery, and while rare, can help catch certain medical diagnoses such as postpartum high blood pressure, as one example.

Your postpartum recovery and journey is just that, a journey, and it is not a one size fits all. We are proud to provide a comprehensive care plan to meet you where you are in your healing journey.

The best part? At MovementX, we come to you.

We know how hard it is to leave the house with a newborn, and how stressful it can be to sit in a waiting room or plan out nap time and feeding schedules.

That’s why mobile physical therapy is such a powerful option for postpartum care.

We bring everything to you in the comfort of your own home. If you need to take a quick break to change or feed your baby, no problem! Sessions are designed to fit your space, your comfort, and your baby’s schedule.

Healing happens best when it’s convenient, consistent, and compassionate, and that’s exactly what mobile care offers.
