Preparing to Succeed in Marketing as a MovementX Physical Therapist

Preparing to Succeed in Marketing as a MovementX Physical Therapist

At MovementX, once we complete the initial conversations ensuring a cultural alignment on both sides, we view the rest of the interview process as a preparation process.

Abraham Lincoln’s quote aptly describes our approach:

“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the ax.”

When both parties are operating at their best, doing everything possible to help you reach your personal and professional goals, we can achieve extraordinary accomplishments together.

For instance, one of the many areas we are unique at MovementX is that our providers actively participate in their caseload building and marketing. As an MXer, part of your job is informing your local community about the high-quality out-of-network physical therapy services you offer.

You can read more about why and our philosophy behind it here, but those who are most successful in physical therapy marketing are well prepared. As President Lincoln alludes to above, their ax is well-sharpened in the pursuit of success.

During the interview (aka preparation) process, we will take you through a series of exercises designed to ensure you are ready and well prepared for your transition into your new thriving life, what we think is the best physical therapy job out there.

Below, discover the three steps behind what this preparation process looks like…

Step 1: The MX Base Camp

We love a good climbing metaphor, so let’s talk about your MX base camp! Since we’re at the beginning of your Provider Journey, we need to know what you’re trekking with and what provisions we need to supply to help you reach your summit!

This first exercise takes a deep dive into your current professional network, and is functionally an inventory of the people around you. We split them up into three distinct categories, and you can see it here:

If you have a strong inventory of potential referrers in each of those three categories, you are setting yourself up for success to effectively market and grow your cash based physical therapy services.

Once you have your base camp established, you can get even more prepared for the ascent to the summit.

Step 2: Crush the Checklist

Taking this climbing metaphor further, knowledge of your provisions are critical—if you know everything about them, you will be even better set up for success.

  • It’s great to have food, but do you know how many calories you have relative to how many calories you will need each day?
  • It’s great to have hiking boots, but it’s even better to know how many more miles they will last compared to how many you need to go.
  • It’s great to have a coat, but you better know if it will keep you dry in the rain!

Okay, you get the point—detailed knowledge is power, and the more you have at this point, the better.

But how exactly can you get the information you need? What questions need to be asked and answers need to be found? How will you know if your cash based physical therapy marketing efforts will be a success?

To answer these questions and more, we put together a Referrer Prep Checklist. In this guided checklist, you will see valuable tips including:

  • Our breakdown of the common categories of your referral partners
  • Target referral numbers for each referrer category
  • The Top 5 Questions to ask yourself and your partners to drive referrals

This Referrer Prep Checklist further breaks down our referrer categories and offers you guidance based on our years of experience in helping providers thrive in the MX model.

Step 3: Design Your Future

Now that you have an inventory of your network and have done the hard work to anticipate questions that typically arise during your journey, it’s time to envision your ideal future—your best physical therapy job and life ahead.

During our interview/preparation process, we have found 2 prompting questions to be particularly helpful:

1. Your 3 Month Vision

Visualize yourself as the newest MovementX physical therapist. You’ve enjoyed the interview process, celebrated upon getting hired, and your early patient caseload is now picking up steam. Write down answers to the following questions, being as specific as possible…

  • What is your goal number of sessions per week? (our average is 20)
  • What meaningful milestones will you be hitting over the next 3 months?

For example, it might be the number of new patient referrals per week, or on track to your annual PT salary amount like $115,000/year.

  • What timeline do you hope to achieve each milestone?
  • How will you feel when you crush these milestones?

2. Your 3 Year Vision

Now, visualize what your life will be like in three years. In 2-3 paragraphs, describe your ideal day-to-day existence. Include your responses to the following questions…

  • What does your typical workday look like, each hour?
  • What is your work environment like?
  • Who are you working with?
  • Who do you work for?
  • How do you feel?

One of the first activities you will complete as you transition into MovementX is setting your personal and professional goals. When you have a clear picture of what you want life to look like in 3 months and also in 3 years, we can work backwards and easily identify your goals.

Bringing It All Together

At MovementX, we will never commit to you if we don’t fully believe we can help you succeed.

This preparatory process is designed for you to learn, grow, and improve—all while setting the foundation to succeed in the next phase of your life and professional physical therapy career.

Each step is intentional and meant to deliver value. It’s a result of years of evolution, experimentation, and execution! In fact, this entire process is a reflection of one of our core values at MovementX: Passion x Purpose.

Whether cash based physical therapy marketing is brand new to you or something you’ve been doing for years, the team at MovementX is fired up to chat with you, learn about you, and move the profession forward with you. Let’s get to work!
